The Center for Disease Control released the below charts that indicate that the average weight for a newborn boy is about 5.5 pounds and that same measure holds for girls too. However there is other suggesting the average weight for both sexes is closer to 7.16 pounds as a newborn. The CDC charts are below so you can take a look at them for yourself. While the 5.5 pound number sounds a little low to me it appears the data was developed by the National Center for Health Statistics in collaboration with the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion in 2000. So, that sounds pretty legitimate to me.
